Its weather is excellent. Its atmosphere is clear, and its air is pure; indeed it is the best climatic region. Summer temperatures reach 30 Centigrade and below zero in winter, when towards the end of January snow covers its mountains and lands for some days every year. Light snow fell in an exceptional way towards the beginning of April in 1870, 1949 and 1990 too. Rain falls in the winter season only. The average number of days in which rain falls varies from 30 to 60 days with most of it falling in January, February and March. The average annual rainfall varies from 350 to 800 millimeters. The average humidity varies from 50 to 75%.
When there is a drought for a long time, and people become apprehensive because of the dryness, they gather together at Manger Square, then go on foot to St. Elias' Convent four kilometers away. They sing rain songs, praying for rain to fall. Frequently their wish is fulfilled. They no longer return home when rain falls. This is a very old custom.
