The Artas Lettuce Festival, which took place on Sunday, April 22, 2012, was different this year. The traditional elements of the Lettuce Festival -folklore, food, crafts, exhibits, tours of the village and museum, hikes and lettuce,which normally last several days - were combined into a one day "moving festival" or "festival hike." In contrast to previous festivals, given the experimental format of the festival and to keep the hike manageable, the festival was not open to the general public, but by invitation only. Over 130 people from Palestinian ministries, offices and institutions, performers, and foreign hikers were among those that experienced this unique event. After the festival, an Italian Rosanna Maryam Sirignano, an Italian linguist studying the Arabic of the female informants of Hilma Granqvist during the Mandate era, wrote to introduce herself and to express her wish to attend the Lettuce Festival. Falestin Naili, an Artas Expert residing in France has accepted the invitation of the Artas Folklore Center to become its Virtual Scholar in Residence. Falestin's expertise will be invaluable as we try select from and adapt the huge body of work on Artas for Tourism Projects based on Community Development.
A couple of pages are devoted to Artas in Visit Palestine, by the team at www.visitpalestine.ps one of the first websites on Palestinian tourism with visual and narrative appeal. The huge popularity of the Artas Folklore Troupe at the Medit-Terra Festival, their responses to the questionnaire and other aspects of their work are mentioned in a 2011 book entitled Contested Mediterranean Spaces: Ethnographic Essays in Honour of Charles Tilly
